Roles and Responsibilities of First Nation Community

Governments in the NWT

COMING SOON

Developed by the Government of the Northwest Territories, Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, with support from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada.

As of 2025, there are several communities in the Northwest Territories that are governed by a First Nation that is responsible for delivering both municipal (local) and membership services. They either have reserve status or are governed by local Dene organizations without self-government or treaty implementation agreements in place with the federal government. This makes governing these communities unique from other communities in the territory.

Roles and Responsibilities of First Nation Community Governments in the Northwest Territories is a learning series. It captures the unique challenges and opportunities of providing good governance in these NWT communities.

Modules include:
1. Legislation and Authority
2. Governance and Operations
3. Governance Tools and Decision Making
4. Public Engagement and Planning
5. Financial Accountability
6. Legal and Ethical Obligations
